Why We Still Love Lucy
Hello, hello--hello!
As you know, we didn't have all that much to celebrate this past week, with this country's financial woes and the dept ceiling and the stock market tanking and the U.S. chopper crashing in Afghanistan and all, but there is one thing we can all be thankful to God for--we still love Lucy.
Lucille Ball, television's crowned queen of comedy, would have been 100 this past week, if she had lived (she died in 1989 at age 77). She was a very popular movie actress in the 1930's and 40's, but, of course, she will always be remembered by may fans all over the world (and even some out in space) as the wacky and adorable Lucy Ricardo, the better half of Cuban Band leader Ricky Ricardo, in the classic TV sitcom I Love Lucy, which ran on CBS from 1951 to 1957, and hasn't left the TV screen since, and that's because it's been in syndication ever since, having been broadcast on every independent, and, in later years, on cable (currently on TV Land), and translated in just about every language on this planet.
There are a lot of reasons why I Love Lucy means so very much to so many people. First of all, it set the standard for every other sitcom that followed it. It was the first sitcom to be filmed before a live studio audience (no canned laughter here folks). Second, it was the first sitcom to star a Latino actor, Desi Arnez, of course. And third, it was the first sitcom in which the main actors, were also the producers. At the end, you will notice that the announcer always says that I Love Lucy is "a Desilu production." That's because the company that produced the show was owned by none other than, Desi and Lucy! Each of their names are part of the name of the company.
But, of course, the main reason why we still love Lucy has got to be because, the show is soooo funny! You have to admit, very few sitcoms that have come along in the years since I Love Lucy's heyday, while they may have had a couple of laughs, they couldn't hold a candle to some of the classic episodes from Lucy's show. You can name your pick: the Vitametavegitan episode, the candy factory episode, the grape-stomping episode, even the episode when Little Ricky was born, these are screen gems that very few were able to beat before, or since. Yes, my friends, these are just but a handful of reasons why Lucy still manages to make us laugh, even in the face of all the adversities we now have in our lives today.
So, Happy birthday, Lucy, and may your sitcom be around another 100 years!
Well, that's all the time we have for this week. Until next time, be well, stay well, and remember to help the disaster survivors!
Sincerely,
Marley Sue
