Elizabeth Taylor: Turning Camp Into Class
Hello, hello--hello!
Well, there was just so much going on in the past couple of weeks, with the Japan earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disaster and the Middle East unrest, that I didn't have time to talk about the passing of one of the greatest actresses of our time, or any other time, but luckily, this week, I finally have some time, so now, my tribute to the one, the only, Elizabeth Taylor.
Truly, it definitely was the end of an era when we lost Liz Taylor to congestive heart failure, and, truly, I really don't even think that anyone even knows just how much an important era in Hollywood, and world, history, really ended. You know, in the mid 1960's, there was a song called Another You, which contained these lyrics "I know, there'll never be another you." Well, we all know, that there'll never be another Elizabeth Taylor. She was definitely one of a kind, just like her movies were. Yeah, I know, we all have a favorite Liz Taylor movie. Whether it's National Velvet or Giant or Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woof, or, yes, even Cleopatra, Liz and her movies took us to a place and a time that most of us normally would never have a chance to go to, and for that, the entire world will be forever grateful.
Now, a word about Cleopatra. There really is a way to watch this movie and really enjoy it. Just imagine, for a moment, that this is not a movie that stars two of the most important stars in Hollywood, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Imagine, instead, that you're watching one of the most campiest B movies of all time. Even more campy than Valley of the Dolls. When you stop watching Cleopatra as a star-studded spectacle and start appreciating it for what it really is, one of the greatest camp romps in cinema history, then you can finally start enjoying it! That's how I've always done it! So here's to you, Liz. Hail, and farewell.
Well, that's all the time we have for this week. Until next time, be well, stay well, and remember to help the earthquake survivors!
Sincerely,
Marley Sue
