A Not So Hot Movie Night
Hello, Everybody!
Well, it seems that spring has finally sprung, in Southern California anyway. The rainy season seems to be finally coming to an end, and nice, balmy weather has begun to rightfully take its place. It's the perfect weather to go out and see a movie. That is, if that's your choice. Recent news states that, by and large, Americans (and Canadians, for that matter) have been staying away from the movie theaters in droves, and you really can't blame them: High ticket prices and equally high concession stand prices (not to mention ever increasing gas prices and bus and train fares, people have to get to the theaters) are noted to be the culprits in people opting to stay away. But according to a recent Los Angeles Times article (dated March 30), there is another reason why people are staying away: The majority of the movies being released today stink.
And, of course, there is a reason why these movies stink: It's the screenwriter, or lack there of. Most of today's movies are not written by professional writers. They're are written by people with agents. The professional writers are all blogging online (wink wink, nudge nudge). Take Sucker Punch, for example. It would have been better if it was a video game instead of a movie. But it wasn't all that bad. It is a good piece of camp. How can you tell if something is camp? When it's funny in places where it's not supposed to be funny. But even if it is good camp, it's not great camp, like Gladiator and Cleopatra (featuring the late, great Elizabeth Taylor) were. It's kinda like cheese corn camp, like Mommie Dearest and Valley of the Dolls were. It's Plan 9 From Outer Space with lookers. But even if everything coming out of Hollywood today were Gone With The Wind, who can afford to go out for dinner and a movie nowadays? With today's prices, you and your date are gonna have a movie and dinner, and the dinner is gonna be popcorn, nachos, and Coca Cola.
Well, that's all the time we have for this week. Until next time, be well, stay well, and remember to help the earthquake survivors!
Sincerely,
Marley Sue
