Christmas Messages, Here And There

Hello, everybody!

Well, the official countdown of the yuletide season (as well as the rest of this year) has officially begun, and, despite what's going on with the economy and the politics and social unrest and all, the annual holiday festivities has started getting underway.  Lots of folks are buying stuff, but, however, there's a lot of us who are making our own gifts, present company included. This weekend I experimented with making a nutcracker doll out of used paper towel and tissue paper rolls, and it came out pretty good, if I do say so myself.  You can also make dolls and stuffed animals out of socks and pillow cases as well.  Now those make excellent holiday gifts.  For those of you who are extra talented in the kitchen, homemade cakes, cookies, pies, and brownies also make great holiday gifts as well.

This season also marks the time when all those timeless Christmas movies and specials make their annual rounds on TV as well.  I'm sure you all have your favorites, as I do.  My favorite holiday movie is Miracle on 34th Street, mainly because it's mostly escapist fare.  It's A Wonderful Life is a little heavy handed, and A Christmas Carol is full of social messages, both of which are fine in and of themselves, but when it comes to the holidays, I think we all should also have a little time to remember the lighter, funnier side of life.  Miracle On 34th Street fits the bill like a Wintertime mitten.  I also like the holiday TV specials as well.  A lot of people are nuts about Roudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and the other Rankin/Bass offerings, but I also enjoy A Charlie Brown Christmas, because it tells us that, no matter how insignificant people might think something is (like the scrawny Christmas tree with the one lone ornament on it), it means something to somebody (like
what that tree meant to Charlie Brown).  And How The Grinch Stole Christmas teaches us that, you might take away our tree, our gifts, and even our roast beast, but you can't take Christmas out of our hearts.  Gee.  I guess the most light hearted fare does have some social messages to them after all.

Well, that's all the time we have for this week.  Until next time, be well, stay well, and remember the Earthquake survivors!

Sincerely,

Marley Sue
