Pass the Pumpkin Pie--Or Not!

Hello, and a Happy Thanksgiving in advance to one and all!

Yup!  It's that time of year again!  It's the official kick off of the holiday season!  For, everyone knows, that the Christmas season really doesn't begin on December 1st!  Oh, no!  It officially begins the day after Thanksgiving, or, as it has been recently known as of only a few years ago, "Black Friday!"  (The word "black" usually means a dark, foreboding day in history, but in this case, it's good news for merchants, though not so much for consumers, who have to fork over their dough.)  But enough about Christmas, which we will have plenty enough time to talk about during the coming weeks.  This week, we're going to spend all our time talking about that holiday right before Christmas, "Turkey Day."

For, this is what this holiday has become known as since about the time "Sesame Street" debut four decades ago.  "Turkey Day."  It's not about getting along with new cultures whom we can learn from and who can bring something to our cultural table (so to speak!), it's not about surviving the treacherous climate and weather of a whole new continent, it's not even about being thankful for what the Good Lord allows you to have.  No, sir and madam, it's about stuffing your face full of turkey and dressing and pumpkin pie, then sitting in front of the TV to watch the game, whichever game that might be.  Yes, sir, this holiday is not so much about saying grace than saving room for the cranberry sauce.  This holiday is not so much about counting blessings than it is counting calories that you'll be consuming as you're sitting next to family you haven't seen in ages (and probably wouldn't care if you ever saw again, sorry to say that about some families).

And speaking of pumpkin pie, if you haven't gotten your pumpkin pie filling at the store by now, I would suggest that you go out and get some soon, like this coming week, because it looks like there might not be enough pumpkin pies for the upcoming Christmas dinner tables across the great country.  From what I've been hearing in the news lately, they're having a pumpkin pie filling shortage.  And it's not because of what you thinking, either.  There isn't a shortage of pumpkins.  There's more than enough pumpkins to be had.  It's just that, this past fall, there was a such heavy rain fall that the pumpkin patches got too soggy and too muddy that the tractors that harvest the pumpkin crops got stuck in the mud, and couldn't get to the crop.  The pumpkins are rotting in the official Libby's patch somewhere back east as I'm typing this very blog, and the more they remain in the mud, the greater the possibility that many families are going to have a pumpkin pie-less Christmas this coming holiday season.  Oh, well.  Not to worry, though.  I hear that sweet potato pie makes for a great replacement for pumpkin pie.

Well, that's all the time we have for this week.  Until next time, be well, and stay well!

Sincerely,

Marley Sue
